Yes, Appletalk does have a bit of overhead...doing transfers between
two Macs using Timbuktu Pro and TCP/IP I can get from 18-20K per
second transfers.

The serial ports are supposed to be able to be externally driven to
something close to 1,000,000bps (that's bits per second).  Unfortunately
I've never run across anything that does that.
