The usual way to transfer software from PC to an Apple II is via a NULL
modem connection. This requires a NULL modem adaptor which joins modem cables
from the Apple II (e.g. an Apple II Super Serial Card) and PC (e.g. serial
port COM1 or COM2).
Once you have the hardware connection, you start up telecom programs on
each computer (like ProTerm on the Apple IIe and HyperTerm on the PC) and do
the file transfers.
The above works well for transferring most 8-bit Apple II files which
are in ShrinkIt compressed form (including ShrinkIt whole-disk archives). An
exception is transferring disk image files. Unless you have a 3.5" drive
attached, you will not have space on a typical 5.25" diskette to hold .dsk
files.
ADT is a dedicated A2<-->PC utility for transferring 5.25" .dsk disk
image files from PC directly to 5.25" diskette. It has the added feature of
not requiring that you have an Apple II telecom program in order to transfer
the Apple II part of the software. (So, you can use ADT to transfer a disk
image which includes a telecom program and sort of 'bootstrap up' your
system.)
