Dancing windows

It all started when I added a Focus 500 meg to the Ramfast with a ZIP
drive on a ROM 3.  I switched the Ramfast to an Apple High Speed SCSI
reinstalled the system 6.0.1, Spectrum and added Prosel to fix.

When I use a word processor, either Hermes or Appleworks GS and start opening
files the window keeps opening and closing rapidly. There was a sound with
the open windows event and that played like a hiccough. I went into the
control panel and turned off that sound, rebooted and it continued playing. 
As I open more files the problem gets worse and I have been writing text on
hermes with the sound hiccoughing along If I drag the mouse it stops. From
the desktop when I open partitions enough the files start disappearing. 
Everything is back on restart. Spectrum may be involved because I once booted
from the backup disk on the Zip and had set the Spectrum receive file for
something not on this computer.  It danced the light between the daisychained
3.5s. Any ideas about where to look.  Sandy
