The serial port did not work in your case because your IIGS
must have not had its serial port initialized to 57.6k. The
interesting thing about newer printers with serial ports is
that they assume the serial port would be used by a Mac.
The Mac standard communication rate for serial port
printers is 57.6k. For a IIGS to use the Epson Stylus
printers, it must communicate to the printer at 57.6k. The
Harmonie package from Joe Kohn's Shareware Solutions
II includes a 57.6k serial port driver for this purpose.
To use such printers with AppleWorks requires a CDA
that sets the printer port to 57.6k. You would then have
to boot GS/OS before launching AppleWorks and you
would have to run the CDA to set the port speed to
57.6k before printing.
