The only problem with this idea is that the iMac hs no serial ports.
You will need a USB to serial adaptor, such as the one sold by Keyspan.

They should be.  AppleWorks on the Mac (and its predecessor,
ClarisWorks) includes translators for converting Apple II AppleWorks
files, as long as they were saved by version 3.0 or earlier of
AppleWorks.  There is no support for (Apple II) AppleWorks 4.x or 5.x
files, though word processor and spreadsheet files might be mainly OK.
