There's free space from 768 to 975. There's also some free space starting
at 3072 and 31490, but how much space you can have there depends on how
big your program and variables are.

Yes, if you just poke things into random memory addresses, you're going to
crash it.
If you're not doing anything serious and you don't have a disk in the
drive or anything, sometimes poking random things into random addresses
can be entertaining! My favorite ways to crash it are X = PDL(28), CALL
900, and POKE 54,INT(RND(1)*256):POKE 55,INT(RND(1)*256). :-)
