Switch one doesn't matter unless you want to send a high bit through. If you
don't care about printing high ASCII (language characters, legal and math
symbols, box edges), then it can be set either way. AppleWorks 5.1 implemented
typing/printing high asciii directly from the keyboard (using the Control-A
command or MouseText and Inverse characters), so printing high ascii has become
more popular. If you do not care about high ASCII, then you don't care which
way switch one is set.
When switch 1 is on the MSB is not transmitted to the printer. When the
Switch 1 is off, MSB is under software control. AppleWorks' software control is
in the interface code, e.g., Control-I 0N Control-I H. All this is documented
in the Grappler+ manual. Step three, a high ascii DeskJet character set (such
as PC-850) must be used, and step 0, the GS control panel should be set to Your
Card.
Although I do not have a Grapppler now, I did have one for all this research
(which came from others, I just tested and confirmed it.) I agree that others
could contibute their experience now. Where is Roger Maltz when we need him?
