No, you are perfectly free to help that person by pointing them to the
correct newsgroup and if you desire, you can answer their question(s)
in e-mail or in the proper newsgroup rather than creating an off topic
thread here. That is the proper and most considerate way to handle
this situation for all concerned. Readers of this newsgroup don't get
off topic posts to skip over and if the question is moved to a more
appropriate newsgroup, readers of that newsgroup will get to benefit
from the help that is posted.
At any rate, the person will get the help they wanted and learn a
little more about using the internet at the same time.

comp.sys.apple2 is not really a generic Apple II news group. There
are a number of Apple II related news groups and comp.sys.apple2 is
used to cover anything not covered by one of the other groups. Here
are the major Apple II related newsgroups and what they are for
discussing:
comp.binaries.apple2 - for Apple II files only
comp.emulators.apple2 - Apple II emulators issues
comp.sys.apple2.comm - communications issues
comp.sys.apple2.gno - GNO/ME operating system issues
comp.sys.apple2.marketplace - buy/sell Apple II items
comp.sys.apple2.programmer - Apple II programming issues
comp.sys.apple2.usergroups - user group issues and announcements
comp.sys.apple2 - anything else Apple II related

Like I said before, I don't see a lot of people "rant and rave". I
mostly see people point out to the participant(s) of an off topic
thread that it should really be done elsewhere.
Personally, I get a little annoyed when I get my messages for the day
and see 30 messages listed only to find there are only 10 - 20 worth
reading. If people didn't step in to stop inappropriate posts and to
point people to more appropriate newsgroups then the ratio of signal
to noise (posts worth reading versus posts you don't care about) would
be much higher.

Well, the largest number of Apple II emulator users can be found in
comp.emulators.apple2, not here. Most of the people here still use
the real thing. Oh, and comp.emulators.apple2 comes before
comp.sys.apple2 in a sorted list of newsgroups so it should be found
first.

Maybe it is just the fact that I find real world relationships so much
stronger that makes me feel I haven't made any online friends. It is
much easier to lose track of or forget about someone you hang out with
online than it is to do the same thing with someone you got together
with physically on a regular basis. I've forgotten the names of many
of the regular users I used to talk to on CRS years ago but I still
remember a lot of the people that I met through my user group at that
same time and haven't seen since.
Basically, I'm retracting part of my statement as I probably have made
some online friends and just don't feel it as much as my real world
friendships. However, I'm only retracting part of my statement
because I still don't come here purposely to make friends. :-)

I didn't say anything about "having treated others badly" either.

I feel it is everyone's place to let others know when they are doing
something wrong on the net just like I think it is everyone's place to
let others know when they are doing something wrong in the real world.

Well, here's a netiquette tip for you. If you are trying to convey
some kind of emotion like sadness, surprise or humour you should use
what are called emoticons like the one and the end of this line. :-)
