RS-422 and RS-232 differ in connectors and the fact that
under RS-422, the DTE vs. DCE can be reversed inside
the cable.

IIGS and Mac modem cables have an RS-422 connector
on one end and an RS-232 connector on the other.

That's why IIGS and Macs have different modem and
printer cables.

I could be wrong, but that's how I've always thought of it.
