This has caused me mild frustration in the past too! Since I share a
SCSI hard disk between my Mac and my IIGS, I usually like to download
IIGS files from the internet with my Mac and throw them on the HD, then
take the HD to my IIGS and copy the files. The problem is this: PC
Exchange (or File Exchange, or the extension "ProDOS File System" in
earlier versions of System 7) includes a driver ("File System Translator"
if you will) to read 400K and 800K ProDOS floppies, but will only work
with floppies. It will not recognize or mount ProDOS partitions on
larger drives or Zip disks. I realized this though before I partitioned
my HD. My 500 MB external HD has six 32 MB ProDOS partitions and one 306
MB HFS partition. My Mac will will not read and mount the ProDOS
partitions, so if I want to transfer something from my GS to my Mac, it
first has to be copied to the HFS partition.
Put simply, the software that Apple supplies with Mac OS cannot use
ProDOS partitions. There may be a third-party SCSI disk tools package
you could use to do the trick, but I would back up all my data before
trying that, because it's something Apple does not support, and if
something goes wrong, your data on the ProDOS partition could become
corrupted.
Hope it works out.
