A while back I had posted on this aspect of HFS.
The block size is based upon the partition size. To
get a more efficient block size you will have to repartition
the device with several smaller partitions. I don't have
my calculations handy (or the old post) but keep them
about 200-300 meg each.
On my KEGS/Linux system I have a HFS partition
setup as 128k which works well. Block size is 1k. For
512k (same as 3.5" HFS floppy) you have to keep the
partition under 96 megs.
