On the other hand, I've had a lot less trouble with my Epson Stylus
600 than with my Canon BJC-600.

My first major irritation with the Canon BJC-600 was that the Epson
emulation would not print 66 lines per 11-inch page. If I recall
correctly, it printed only 61 in normal and 65 with a vertical
compression mode that was supposed to allow printing a full page. This
rendered it useless for my primary purpose: to replace a dot matrix
Epson-compatible printer to print some _large_ text files which used
the Epson character mode (and hence line-based page formatting).

Canon didn't respond to the print samples I sent them along with the
(functionally correct) samples from my Citizen dot-matrix printer with
Epson emulation. Strike two.

Ink seemed to evaporate from the printer while sitting (seemed like I
had to refill it every 3-4 weeks whether I printed 1 page or 100) and
the printhead clogged just out of (admittedly two-year) warranty. The
printhead was nearly as expensive as the then-declining price of the
Epson Stylus 600. The Canon went unceremoniously into the trash.

Caveat: by this time I wasn't using the Apple IIgs much so I can't
recall running extensive print tests with the Stylus. But it behaved
much better even on my PC.
