With Harmonie's Internal Rendering, the IIGS does the work; with external
rendering, it's the printer that does all the work.
There are advantages and disadvantages to each method...
Internal Rendering is slower. But, you can use any font you want, including
TrueTypes. External Rendering is very fast, but you are simply dumping the
text to the printer and using the printer's built in fonts.
External Rendering is, in a sense, the equivalent of printing from a
ProDOS-8 program. It's a straight text dump, a la PR#1.
When printing text from GS/OS, Internal Rendering will always, IMHO, yield
better looking results.
That said, on the other hand, I find that when printing graphics from GS/OS,
I achieve the best results when using External Rendering.
