It is a 16-bit processor that's pin-compatible with the 65C02.
It used to be hailed as the future of the Apple II until the
IIGS was released with its 65C816 processor.  I think the
65C802 plugged into a IIe supports two 16-bit programs, a
special version of VIP Professional (a Lotus 1-2-3 clone)
and Merlin 16.
