The only unlabeled key should be the space bar.

This can be caused by a fair number of things
             A) bad disks
             B) Bad or dirty disk drive
             C) computer problens
             D) programs incompatible with that computer such as requiring
more
                  memory, a Z80 card, a 65c02 proccessor etc
             E) programs that require a different Apple II such as a II+ or a
IIe
             F) a hundred other things depending on the software

not really. If it stops in the middle it's doing it for some reason.
Loading is generally pretty much automatic once the computer is turned on

Yes, once you've saved any important documents you've created or altered

The simplest is to startup off a blank DOS 3.3 disk then after writing the
program
type "SAVE X" where X is the name you wish to call the program.

I'd tell us a lot if you could tell us if this is a genuine Apple II or a
clone.
If it is does it say Apple II, Apple II Plus, Apple IIe etc on the cover or
chassis?
When you start it up and do a control-reset does the flashing icon look like

What software are you trying to boot?
