I have one of each and the only visible difference is the logo on the top
lid.
The II+ has a green "plus" under the "apple][" part on the logo plate.
Operationally the only difference between the two is that the II+ has
Applesoft
basic ROM's and the II has Integer basic in ROM's, though that isn't a clear
indicator of their original product distribution as there where a few ways
to alter that.
1) The Applesoft ROM's could be purchased and swapped in for the Integer
basic ROM's (the previous owner did that to the Apple II that I own).
2) you could install an Apple ROM card with either Applesoft or Integer
basic (whichever wasn't installed on the MB) and there was a switch that
stuck out the back that allowed you to boot up with either one (I think DOS
would switch to the appropriate ROM's to execute a given basic prog, not
sure as I don't have a ROM card).
3) you could install a RAM card, (the Apple product was actually called a
"Language Card" .. both my II and II+ have this card) and whichever BASIC
isn't in your ROM's could be loaded into the RAM card and write protected
and DOS will switch to the correct basic given the type of the file.

The Language/RAM card was also required for the UCSD pascal environment as
well as some other software used it for their own purposes.  The company I
work for used to have a database system that loaded itself into the RAM card
and interfaced to Applesoft through the "&" extention.
