Except for one or two titles, no Apple II archive seems to maintain a
collection of MECC software. You can, however, find Oregon Trail on The Vault at
http://www.classicgaming.com/vault/roms/appleiiroms.OregonTrail33500.shtml .
All sorts of Apple II/IIgs games, utilities, system stuff, and educational
software is available for downloading. Be sure to check out the FAQs listing at
http://home.swbell.net/rubywand/A2FAQs4MAJORSITES.html .
The Oregon Trail file on The Vault appears to be a .zip file of a disk image.
So, using WinZIP on your PC, you could probably unZip the downloaded file and get
a .dsk file which will work on an an emulator such as AppleWin. Well, just a
minute ... Yes, the downloaded file is otrail.zip and it unZips into two disk
image files (otrail_1.bin and otrail_2.bin). The suffix ".bin" is not the standard
for a disk image-- should be ".dsk"-- but the 1st disk image seems to boot up okay
on AppleWin.
You do not have to settle for just using downloaded stuff on an emulator. A
.dsk file can be transferred to your IIgs and converted to diskette form for
running on your Apple. For more about converting .dsk files to diskette form see
http://home.swbell.net/rubywand/Csa2FLUTILS.html .
Getting .dsk and other kinds of files from PC to Apple II is pretty easy when
the Apple II is a IIgs. One way is via a NULL modem connection using one of
several Apple II telecom programs.
If you do not have a telecom program, you can use the IIgs version of ADT to
transfer .dsk disk image files from PC to diskettes in your IIgs 5.25" drives.
(ADT includes a way to transfer part of itself to your Apple II without using an
Apple II telecom program. Once it's in your Apple, you can save it and 'talk' to
the PC part of ADT in order to do .dsk transfers.)
