Usually you can improve an old-style LCD display with well arrange
front-lighting (e.g. using one or two cheapo mini 'reading lights' which you can
aim for best results). Messing with voltages going to the display _might_
improve things slightly; but, this is likely to be a lot more bother than it's
worth.
