Re: Exactly what 800K 3.5 drive do I need?

Actually, both the Apple II line and Macintosh shared the Apple 3.5
Drive, part # 825-1304-A, model M0106.

The only drive made specifically for the Macintosh was the Apple 800K
External Drive, part # 825-1174-A, model M0131. This unit did not have
an eject button. However, you could still use it with the Apple II line
if you were running a GUI that let you drag the diskette into the
trashcan to eject. Also, this drive did not have a connector on the
back to connect other drives.

Internally, the drive mechanisms on both the M0106 and M0131 are
exactly the same. The mechanism on my M0131 burned out. So I replaced
it with a 1.44MB mechanism, and it works great! :) Now I only need a
high-density controller for my IIGS.

It is a fact that the Macintosh doesn't use the eject button. When we
use the Apple 3.5 Drive on a Macintosh, the eject button is
non-functional. Even today, I still have the habit of pressing the
eject button expecting the diskette to pop out!!!! :)

You can find images of the labels on both drives at:

And feel free to upload these to your image libraries! The serial
numbers have been covered up to protect the innocent!!! :)
