I have one of these modems... It won't work on the Apple II line
without specialized software, which Shiva never made. What it does is
it traps your printer or modem port on the Macintosh, then redirects
data through the LocalTalk port. Modem software like Z-Term and PPP
packages don't notice the difference.

It also operates as an Apple Remote Access server, where ARA 2.0 or
earlier clients can dial into a LAN and access AppleTalk resources like
file and print servers.
