There was a quite sad incident at the Physics dept. of my University.
Apparently, someone had packed a scientific instrument worth some $20K
into a Sony 19" monitor carton. The carton plus content got stolen,
obviously by someone who thought it had still the monitor in it. I
gathered as much from the dozens of desperate notes tacked to every door
of the institute offering (in the end) to GIVE the thief a brand-new 19"
monitor if he only brought back the instrument (some interference
spectrometer IIRC). I don't know if they ever got the thing back.
