Why is Star Trek GS crashing?

I can only play for 5 seconds when I start Star Trek GS.

I run it, watch the ship phaser into space for a bit, select "New
Game," then listen to Uhura reel off some message, then I get to the
game and, in 5 seconds, the sound stops and the program freezes.

I'm emulating wit' Bernie on a Power Mac. 

Any clues? I practically downloaded the emulator just for this game! In
1993, when I was 15, I stayed up for thousands of nights just to play
this game.

(Were there a thousand nights in 1993?)
