It seems to me that you have a harware problem with the Focus card.
When I boot my IIGS from a complete power down, it waits about 10
seconds for the drive to spin up and then loads GSOS.  Do you get the
pause or do you immediately get the drive check error?

I would give Alltech a call and talk to Tony Diaz.  The number is
(760)724-2404.  If the card is a recent purchase he'll probably
authorize returning it for a replacement.
