     Probably, the Apple Key you mention has a more or less direct connection to
one of the Game Port buttons.

    "No response" sounds like the Keyboard Controller IC or an associated IC is
loose or, perhaps, you are getting a bad connection with the cable going from the
keyboard to the motherboard. Try scootching up and re-socketing each IC on the
keyboard circuit board.

     The above is based upon experience with Apple II's. The Apple III is a fairly
early Apple design; so, it may apply.
