As a former tester for Apple on various products, I had several prototype
units (all of which I returned to Apple). 

Most prototype units had plain cases, so that's not normally enough to tell
anything. You probably have the IIc+ because there were TONS of those as
proto-units and Apple never asked for half of them back. (Technically
speaking it's illegal to own one -- legal title still remains with Apple
Computer).

Proto-Units came packed in plain boxes with manuals (blank pages!) so it
looked just like the final products -- earlier in the cycle this wasn't
true.
