I see shorting 5 & 8 and connecting to 5 on the PC side but I don't see
shorting 8 & 5 on the PC side. Is that your suggestion? Doesn't also
then short 6 on the SSC side? Since I need to get down to 9 pins to get
into my PC is there any difference in the two cables if I still need to
use a 25 to 9 pin adaptor?

If I understand this correctly I can connect directly from SSC 6 to PC
20. Then on the 
SSC side solder a jumper wire from 1 and 4 to 6 and on the PC side
solder a jumper wire from 6 and 8 to 20?
