Sounds like a nice system. Speech recognition and synthesis for the
older Apple IIs usually involved the Adaptive Firmware Card (AFC).

I was thumbing through an old issue of inCider/A+ written by, oddly
enough, Shareware Solutions II's Joe Kohn. It talked about how the
AFC could work together with alternative keyboards and speech
synthsizers like the Echo II.

I remember that there was also a speech recognition unit for the
AFC. You plugged it into the AFC box like an alternative keyboard
input.

On the IIGS, speech SYNTHESIS can also use the Talking Tools
from the Byte Works, which does not require any additional
hardware (the Ensoniq wavetable synthesizer chip in the IIGS is
far more advanced than the design of the Echo II). Theoretically,
it would be possible to use the Ensoniq's ADC to sample speech
for speech recognition purposes.

The current speech recognition hardware for the Apple II all
require that a vocabulary be spoken by the user repeatedly to
"train" the unit to the voice of the user before they become
functional. This might be the root of the problem.
