I played with a III exactly once, about 15 years ago, and I was running
the ][+ emulation at the time.

I seem to recall that once you start the emulator, you still need to boot
your A][ disk.  I think all the emulator did was to patch in a copy of the
][+ ROM and character set, and from there you still needed to swap to the
][+ disk and boot it.  It may be that you're looking at an Applesoft BASIC
prompt but you have no operating system loaded. 

Try booting the emulator, then inserting a DOS 3.3 System Master (if you
can find one) and issuing a...

]PR#6

Then, once that boots, try doing a 

]CATALOG

and see if that works properly.
