Well, in the case of what happened to me, the exact bytes that were duplicated
had been widely published. Since the program in question was not public domain
at the time (September 98, over 9 months ago), we gave out Block Warden
locations - exactly which bytes to patch, and the values to plug in. Hundreds,
if not thousands, of people already had them, and had applied them to their own
setups. So, even if it was an independent effort, it was no great feat or
accomplishment to duplicate this work (which was very difficult and
time-consuming in the first place). The result is that I just won't do it any
more.
