My apologies.  I'm not sure what was wrong with my system the day I
got those horrendous speeds with HFS but I just tried it again and it
worked fine.  I've added/removed some add-ons to/from my system
recently so one of the ones I removed was probably responsible for
slowing down my access to my HFS partition.

This is good because I can now start sorting through all my archives
and get rid of old versions and duplicates and finally figure out
exactly what I have in my collection.

However, I'd be much happier using ProDOS to do this because it is
still faster than HFS, more reliable and I have utilities for it in
case something goes wrong.  As it is, it is going to be a bit of a
pain sorting them because I'm not going to erase my archive floppies
until I know the stuff on them has been put on new floppies and is
working.
