No. You're not doing anything wrong. Only that you have to decide what
to do with it and what kind of software you need

Use Control Reset to disable the disk drive. You can fiddle with your
IIe and do some programming (& computations) here, but you can't save
your work. If you want to do anything more, however, you'll need a disk
drive and an OS.
