It might a problem with the flow control setting.  Check if the DIP
switches are set to their default values as specified in the manual.

In DIP switch bank 1, all the switches should be OPEN (OFF), except
switch 6 which is CLOSED (ON).

In DIP switch bank 2, switches 1 and 2 should be CLOSED (ON), and
switches 3 and 4 should be OPEN (OFF).  Don't touch switches 5 and 6,
which are set at the factory.


Also check the IIgs control panel settings for the printer port.
Everything should be set to its default position, particularly the
DTR/DSR handshaking option.
