Re: More fun at the thrift store
update to my own post:
the error i was getting during the self-test went away when i pulled the
zip gs out. as i read the A2 faqs i learned that the error message is
related to timing, and normal when a fully functional zip gs installed.
but i still need the jumper settings for that card.
the problem seems to have been isolated to the memory card, a "GS Sauce"
card from Harris Labs, Inc., (c)1990. The card is fully populated with
4 1-meg SIMMs, and the Control Panel correctly reports the full 4 meg of
ram. the card has four dip switches. 1-3 control how much ram is
installed, and i can't tell what the fourth one does.
when i boot into gs/os with this card installed, it reports a low-memory
error. but that goes away when i do a shift-boot. i can't tell what
Init/DA might be screwing things up for me.
i thought maybe the simms were bad, so i switched them out with some
from an old 386. the problem didn't go away, so i tried using a vanilla
Apple 1-meg expansion card. the problem went away, sort of, since less
than 25% of the way through the startup thermometer the computer
locked. i'm sure that card is good, too. i used to use it in a rom 01.
please, please help me with this, if you can. i'm really close to
getting this machine working, but i'm missing just a little bit of
detail. if a zip gs owner could tell me (where to find, even) the dip
switch settings, i would be grateful. if anyone knows about this wonky
memory card, information would also be appreciated there. and i would
*really* be indebted to anyone who might know why the machine
locks/refuses to boot with inits.
thanks in advance.
