Open the bottom cover and remove the ball, then start the computer.
After the computer boots, use your finger to move the horizontal roller.
If the mouse pointer on the screen moves when you spin the roller with
your finger, the mouse is not damaged, just needs cleaning. If the
pointer doesn't move horizontally, but will move vertically, you can do
some troubleshooting looking for the difference between the two. You can
also get an ADB mouse from a Mac, or order a new or used one for
$20-$30.
