They are network cards.  Corvus sold Apple II networking hardware
and software long before Ethernet or LocalTalk.  One Apple II acted
as a server with its own hard drive.  Other Apple IIs use the card to
connect together to the server.  Pretty neat, actually.  They even had
email to each station.
