It is entirely possible the person who posted that reply did also send
an e-mail reply as well.  It does serve a purpose in that any Mac
users that happent to scan through the messages will easily discover
that this isn't a Mac group and will therefore not post their own off
topic questions or comments and will instead seek out the appropriate
newsgroups.

Besides, it seems that this kind of reminder is needed right now.  I
just went through 5-10 off topic messages before reading this.  This
means that about one third of the messages I just captured had nothing
to do with the Apple II.

I don't see this at all.  I see both Mac and PC questions (and some
other miscellaneous stuff) being answered here as well as them being
directed to ask their questions in a more appropriate newsgroup.
Although I haven't actually counted them, I'd say more of these
questions are Mac related than PC related.  The fact that no one using
a PC would search for a newsgroup with the word "Apple" in it kind of
backs up that hypothesis.

However, none of this means much.  It takes me a fraction of a second
to hit the "N" key and skip on to the next unread message in my
newsreader.
