It is a special expansion slot for a memory card. I've got my own IIc+
equipped with a Ram //c Plus (1Mb) from Sequential Systems, and it works
beautifully -- AppleWorks loads itself completely into memory with plenty of
room to spare, and I can copy a 3.5" 800K disk in just two passes (the first
pass reads the entire disk, the second duplicates it)!
