Apple //c+ questions....

I've recently come into posession of a //c+.   I've never had any of the //c
family of computers so I figured this would be the best place to start/finish. 
I've read the FAQ regarding the holding of the escape key to make the machine
run "slower" but frankly I don't see any difference between "slow" and "fast". 
 My stock unaccelerated //gs seems faster and it only runs at 2mhz in fast mode
as opposed to the //c+'s supposed 4mhz.    The //c+ passes Apples internal and
disk bases diagnostics just fine.  I'm wondering if there is any good/easy way
to verify the speed of the machine.   On a related note what should I expect to
find in the processor socket??  65c02?? Something looking more like the old
ZIPChip or RocketChip??  I'm asking this because I'm thinking that the chip
currently in the machine is not the one that should be in there..
