This is possible. But it will be really a lot of work...

Not really. The same thing has happened to the Atari ST. The MILAN has a
68060 cpu with x00 MHz, a PCI2.1 bus and uses PC compatible RAM and
expansion cards. But there is still a big market for such a machine: all
the musicians who have their software running in the TOS environment.

I don't know whether the small number of Apple ][gs users (I say users,
not collectors) would justify such a complex project. At least not as a
commercial project, perhaps on volunteer basis. Like the open source
software.

Nevertheless, some day I will write the VHDL code for a ][plus
mainboard. A one-chip ][plus, just for fun...
