iMac network connectivity

Okay,
I don't know the 1st thing about apple computers. The boss sez get an iMac
in now.
So, here it is. I cannot get it to communicate on the network (no
appletalk).
I believe the ARP requests are not get answered because the broadcast
address is
incorrect (0.0.0.0). Is there some way to change the broadcast address?
It will RARP from a machine but then attempts to ARP the router without
success.
