I have experienced difficulty trying to backup my FOCUS.1 hard drive using
Archiver. If anyone has the patience to wade through my sad story below,
and has any suggestions, I'd appreciate their remarks.
I booted from the FOCUS.1 hard disk.
I formatted a 3.5" floppy which I named :untitled, and put it in the 3.5"
disk drive (slot 5, drive 1).
I looked at memory under the Control Panel before I began. RAM Disk and
RAM Cache were both at 0K. Memory in use was 1053K, Available memory
4194K (for a total of 5247K RAM), and the maximum block size was 3922K.
I then exited the Control Panel, back to the GS/OS System 6.0.1 main
screen. (Is that screen called the Finder?) I double-clicked on the
FOCUS.1 icon, then double-clicked on the FOCUS.Utils in the FOCUS.1
window, and then double-clicked on Archiver in the FOCUS.Utils window.
An Archiver window, followed by a "Welcome to Archiver!" window, appeared
on my screen. I clicked on "Backup of Entire Volume" and then on OK.
In the Volume Backup window which followed, I chose
Backup from: :Focus.1
Backup to: .APPLEDISK3.5A (contains :untitled)
I then clicked Backup.
On the Entire Volume Backup window, there appeared
Source: :FOCUS.1
Destination: .APPLEDISK3.5A
Backup size: 6,825K
Where it asked for a comment for this backup set, I entered "Initial
backup of FOCUS.1 on 2.16.1999."
I then clicked on Begin.
It then asked me to insert the first disk. So I removed and inserted the
3 5" disk in slot 5, drive 1.
When it asked whether it was OK to destroy the volume :untitled, I
clicked on Yes.
The following screen had a thermometer and said "Backing up volume
date...", but the thermometer remained empty, and was replaced quickly by
a blank blue screen. There was no indication of any activity and the
lights on the disk drives remained off. After about 10 minutes I hit
<Ctl>-<OA>-<Reset> and there appeared briefly on the screen the error
message:
Detected trashed memory or (less likely) bad RAM. Error $
I hope I captured the whole message as it disappeared quickly. I had to
repeat the whole process to document it.
At the suggestion of a friend, I have run Archiver again, from a 3.5"
floppy drive, and with an 800K RAM Disk, with the same results.
Do you have any idea what has happened?
Thank you
