>>> With all of the postings by Apple II users desiring to start up
their own BBS, couldn't we go a step further and revive AppleLink?

>>I doubt we could use the name AppleLink, but yeah, having a network
for Apple // computers again sounds like a good idea. We might even
broaden our base a bit, and have it for *all* 8-bit computers, and maybe
call it "The Orphanage." A place people can go to for help with their
8-bit computers, Apple or otherwise.

>I use a place here in Colorado, called the Dinosaur Board, since it
supports alot of the older 8 bit computers, Atari, Apple II, and the
like.
>It is connected to the internet so it supports email and such, nice
system, only not a local call for most of the US.

>Very nice board, well supported by the admins, has alot of
functionality.

Maybe with "dime-a-minute" or less long distance is no longer an
issue, but there is a quick fix available as well. Global School Net
(FrEdMail (Free Education Mail)) is shutting down June 30, 1999; leaving
thousands of schools without Apple II internet access.
These schools each have a local "node" allowing local calling to
internet access. According to their directory, there are 211 nodes
operating in 22 states and Washington D.C., as well as Australia (6),
Ireland (1) and Puerto Rico (1).
There is the foundation already laid for local access to the
internet by Apple // computers! A proven program, such as AppleLink,
would be welcomed by many of the schools. Remember, schools still
practice such ancient arts as reading, writing, grammar and spelling.
Our friend and theirs, the Apple // computer has been handling that
without a problem for years. This is a fast, no-cost, no-wiring, no
hassle opportunity allowing AppleLink (I kind of like " The Orphanage"
as a nickname) a quick start up.
Since the computers are already in place operating the FrEdMail
system, the only expense to run it would be the phone access. Much
like the Dinosaur Board (I checked it out yesterday and it does the job),
but "spiffier."
