What might this GS display suggest?

	My friend recently picked up a GS CPU (ROM 0 or 1, unknown)
from a thrift, but powering it up only displays a sort of irregular
checkerboard-like pattern.  Nothing from the keyboard responds (can't
reset, or call up control panel.)

	Any idea of the nature and severity of the problem?  (and
posible remedy?)
