The name AppleLink was actually used for two different systems.

One was an Apple II program, eventually ported to the Mac, intended for
consumers. The system was created, owned and operated by a separate company,
but had the official blessing of Apple Computer. I'm not sure what the
contractual relationship was, but the partnership was close and obvious in
the early days. Eventually the company had a parting of the ways with Apple
Computer and changed their name to America Online. The started supporting
Windows users, and eventually dropped support for Apple II users. You can no
longer use America Online from any Apple II computer. There are still Apple
II areas on America Online, but you have to access them from a Macintosh or
Windows machine.

The other AppleLink was an internal service used by Apple Computer and their
contractors. It only ran on Macintosh computers, and eventually became
redundant as the Internet matured and took over. As far as I know, it no
longer exists.
