Firstly, thanks to everyone that responded. Especial thanks to Philips Tech
Support and to David Gilligan in the UK, who sent me the most amazing
answer, including GIFs of the full manual - so now I'm really flying :-)

Yes, I agree with this: I kept the Apple CD 300 that I was using on the GS
switched off unless I needed it - when I did, access was always acceptably
fast. The only reason I've swapped drives is because I couldn't play audio
CDs on the CD 300/IIGS combination...
