You made me curious Steve, so I checked through my mice, didn�t 
realize I had that many Apple mice.
I discovered that the size of the mouse ball is going to depend 
on which mouse you have.
I measured 7 or 8 Apple IIe - IIc mice and the balls are 1 inch
I checked a dozen A9M0331 and they came in two sizes 1 inch and 
.850 inch
I have a single model G5431 with the sliding instead of rotating 
mouse ball cover which has a 1 inch ball
The 3 Apple Mouse IIs I checked had 7/ 8 (.875) inch balls

I would assume PC mice would come in a variety of imperial and 
metric sizes
