More likely there is no real need for a speed above 4x on a IIGS.
However, my 2x CD-ROM seems much faster on my IIGS than a
1x CD-ROM I tried to connect. I am SURE 4x will be faster on
the IIGS. Why? Because my Iomega Zip Drive is like a million
times faster than that 2x CD-ROM! And my 1GB hard drive is
a million times faster than the Zip Drive. Yes, I'm exaggerating,
but you get the picture.
If my 1GB SCSI hard drive seems so much faster than 2x CD-ROM,
how can it NOT keep up with faster CD-ROMs? It runs the
hard drive faster!
