Hi, David Empson answered this very question not long ago. He
said that the parallel port lacks the critical timing necessary for
the Apple drive. However, a Commodore drive would work. In
fact, it is probably technically possible to use a Commodore drive
on an Apple II.
The Commodore 1571 drive can read 5.25" 360k MS-DOS disks.
