First of all, anyone who is sending HTML email ought to be taken out and shot.
Second, the easiest way to convert HTML to text is to pipe it through a
web browser such as Lynx or SIS. Of course, that requires a shell account
for access to Lynx, or a copy of SIS (I presume SIS can browse files...I
don't have it myself...)
Third, I occasionally get multipart HTML email. Usually, the message
includes both a text version and an HTML version...usually the text
version comes first. But when I use a MIME-compliant mail reader (PINE),
the plain text version gets suppressed and all I see is the HTML-ified
crap because Micro$oft Outlook does not use the proper headers. When I
use a non-MIME mail reader (such as mailx), I can see the plain text.
Even worse are messages marked as using a "Windows" character set. PINE
assumes it can't display those characters and won't even let me read the
message. It's time for Micro$oft to get out of the news and email client
business until they can learn to do it right!
