Why not just buy a smaller external modem?

I have an external Zoom v.34Xplus that is 5.25"W by 6.5"L by 1.375"H.
If I were to stand this modem on its side beside my IIgs (it is
sitting on top of my 486 desktop case beside its monitor at present)
you'd hardly know it was there. This modem's case happens to be
coloured very close to the colour of the IIgs case.

Failing standing it on its side, you could always put it on top of a
5.25" drive beside you IIgs. There are lots of configurations you
could use to do this like:

   MMMMM MMMMM
  333 333 or 55555 333
55555 55555 55555 333

Where MMMMM is the modem, 55555 is a 5.25" drive and 333 is a 3.5"
drive.

In the picture to the right, you can use this basic layout with 0 or 2
5.25" drives and 0 to 2 3.5" drives. In the case of 0 5.25" drives,
I'd stack the 3.5" on the modem or use the top part of the picture to
the left.

Another thing to consider is the extra heat that will be generated
inside your IIgs if you add an internal modem.

But to each his own. I'm just suggesting an alternative was to save
desk space. :-)
